ELEVEN STORIES OF BODIES AND GODHOOD

This weird fiction anthology includes “Crosseyed and Painless,” one man’s discovery of people growing in his basement; “Invaders of the Dreamspace!,” a story of men who wake a god and live to regret it; and “Superstar,” a revenge tale following a fallen angel and a whaling prophet. The titular story, “Flytrap,” is about two workers on a date, and a sitcom that goes horribly wrong.

Liam Fleming’s exquisite ‘Flytrap and Other Stories’ conjures worlds in which the body is the site of disruption, defying logic, expectation, containment. A man sprouts antlers, a boy’s already long leg won’t stop growing, and skin fuses with a car that disappears mid-drive. Nothing, in short, operates with rules, and yet these stories carry us through this territory with panache, wit, humanity, and cinematic power. A major debut.
